Background of the Study
Journalistic responsibility plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception and fostering national security. In conflict-prone areas such as Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, journalists act as intermediaries between the state and citizens, disseminating critical information while holding power accountable. However, the delicate balance between responsible reporting and national security is often challenged by sensationalism, unverified reporting, and political interference. Scholars have emphasized that irresponsible journalism can exacerbate tensions, incite violence, and compromise security efforts (Yusuf & Ahmed, 2023; Bello et al., 2024). Conversely, responsible journalism enhances public awareness, promotes peacebuilding, and supports security initiatives. This study examines the impact of journalistic responsibility on national security in Maiduguri, with a focus on the ethical and professional standards required in such a volatile environment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Maiduguri, the intersection of journalism and national security presents significant challenges. Irresponsible reporting, such as the dissemination of unverified information or the exposure of sensitive security operations, can undermine counterinsurgency efforts and endanger lives. Additionally, journalists face threats to their safety, limiting their ability to practice ethically and effectively (Okoro & Ibrahim, 2023; Musa, 2024). This study addresses the need for a framework that upholds journalistic responsibility while safeguarding national security interests.
